In a significant move, the Federal Government and Labour Union finalized a Memorandum of Understanding on Friday, establishing a new minimum wage of ₦70,000. According to a statement from the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, the new wage will take effect on July 29, 2024, following agreements reached during a committee meeting in Abuja.
The committee, chaired by Head of Civil Service Didi Walson-Jack, also recommended that the wage award previously discontinued by the government should continue until July 28, 2024. This decision was made after careful consideration of the current economic situation.
Walson-Jack praised the committee members for their dedicated efforts in this process. “Both the Trade Union and Government have agreed on the consequential salary adjustments resulting from the new minimum wage,” she stated.
She added that all members reviewed and signed the MOU, which will be forwarded to the Federal Government for implementation. Walson-Jack described the negotiations as the shortest and most amicable to date.
Comrade Benjamin Anthony, National Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council representing the Trade Union, expressed his gratitude and satisfaction with the committee’s work.
