Heartbreak for Man City: Rodri Out for the Season with ACL Injury
Manchester City’s hopes for a fifth consecutive Premier League title have taken a hit as midfielder Rodri limped off during the team’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal, clutching his right knee.
Following tests on Monday, both ESPN and Spanish outlet Marca confirmed he has suffered an ACL tear. This loss is a significant setback for City, especially as they aim to reclaim the Champions League title.
The former Atletico Madrid player has been instrumental, losing only one of his last 84 appearances for club and country. His stellar performances have even positioned him as a potential Ballon d’Or candidate, thanks to his pivotal role in City’s recent Premier League triumph and Spain’s victory at Euro 2024.
After the match against Arsenal, City manager Pep Guardiola praised Rodri’s strength, noting, “He felt something and had to leave the pitch. Otherwise, he would have stayed on. He’s the best holding midfielder in the world and a potential Ballon d’Or winner. I would love for him to win it.”
Rodri’s absence leaves a significant gap in City’s midfield, especially as they were already thin in that area. Mateo Kovacic has stepped into the holding role while Rodri eased back into play after an exhausting season where he was named player of the tournament at Euro 2024.
Just last week, Rodri raised concerns about the demanding schedule for players, hinting at potential strikes from leading athletes. He played over 5,000 minutes across 63 matches for City and Spain last season, stating, “The physical and mental demands are worrying. We are the ones who suffer. Someone needs to take care of us because we are the main characters in this sport, or business, however you want to define it.”
City is set to face Watford in the League Cup just over 48 hours after the Arsenal match, further testing their squad depth in Rodri’s absence.
