President Tinubu’s Rejection Announced in Senate by Sen. Godswill Akpabio!

Today, Senate President Sen. Godswill Akpabio read a letter from President Tinubu regarding his decision to decline assent to the controversial retirement age bill.

Originally proposed in February 2024, the bill was set aside for further research and stakeholder consultation after many senators opposed it. It began its journey during the 7th Assembly, moved to the 9th Assembly where it stalled, and ultimately reached the 10th Senate.

In his letter, Tinubu stated, “Upon thorough examination and careful consideration, I have decided to withhold my assent to the bill.” He emphasized that this decision falls within the powers granted to him by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I sincerely appreciate the diligent work of the Senate in drafting and passing this bill and hope you will understand my position. Please accept my highest regards,” the letter continued.

Sen. Akpabio presided over today’s session, marking the Senate’s return from an eight-week recess.
